The finished volume is as long as three or four novels combined. A long-running adventure. Kind of tour of my life.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/www.rudyrucker.com\/blog\/images5\/rucker_2004_geneseo_house_color.jpg\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Me in 2004 leading students in Geneseo, NY, on a \u201creality tour\u201d\u009d including the house where my novel <em>White Light <\/em>is set. <\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/www.rudyrucker.com\/blog\/images5\/journals_draft3.jpg\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Editing the <em>Journals <\/em>was a pleasant, nostalgic exercise\u2014and it\u2019s given me a clearer idea about what kind of person I am. The image above shows an early marked-up draft proof, which has a different cover from the final version. The final cover is more like the one in the image below.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/www.rudyrucker.com\/blog\/images5\/ruckerjournalskickstarter.jpg\" \/><\/p>\n<p>As I often do these days, I\u2019m publishing the new book via Transreal Books, and I\u2019m running a <a target=\"blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.kickstarter.com\/projects\/rudyrucker\/journals-1990-2014\">Kickstarter drive <\/a>to raise money for it. If you sign up there, you get an ebook, paperback, or hadback\u2014it\u2019s not so different from placing an advance order. The books will be going out in May or June.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" width=\"600\" height=\"338\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/ixcq5jSEbYU?rel=0\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>I made a nice video for the drive.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/www.rudyrucker.com\/blog\/images5\/rucker_2005_tangfat.jpg\" \/><\/p>\n<p>One of my inspirations was <em>The Diaries of Franz Kafka: 1910-1923. <\/em>I love Kafka\u2019s spontaneous surrealism and his intimate tone. Another model is the mammoth <em>Andy Warhol Diaries. <\/em>I found Warhol\u2019s book hypnotic. A portrait of a certain time.<\/p>\n<p>What\u2019s in my <em>Journals<\/em>?<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/www.rudyrucker.com\/blog\/images5\/watergun_necker.jpg\" \/><\/p>\n<p>\u201d\u00a2 <em>Introspection and philosophizing. <\/em>I turn to my journals when I\u2019m undergoing a personal crisis\u2014I find it calming to write what\u2019s on my mind. And I&#8217;m always looking for a easy path to enlightenment.<\/p>\n<p>\u201d\u00a2 <em>Journalism. <\/em>I like to describe the things that I see going on in the daily world around me. I\u2019ve always enjoyed Jack Kerouac\u2019s practice of using words to sketching the scene around me as it&#8217;s going on.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/www.rudyrucker.com\/blog\/images5\/rucker_2006_kiwi.jpg\" \/><\/p>\n<p>\u201d\u00a2 <em>Travel<\/em>. I\u2019m particularly likely to work on my journals when I\u2019m on the road or on a day-trip. I have many series of entries in San Francisco, New York, Europe, Mexico, the Caribbean, and the South Pacific.<\/p>\n<p>\u201d\u00a2 <em>Writing notes<\/em>. As a transrealist, I like seeing the world in terms of science-fiction, casting daily events as ideas for my books. It&#8217;s hard to keep writing year after year, and sometimes in my notes I&#8217;m encouraging myself to keep at it. Here&#8217;s a page listing my <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rudyrucker.com\/journals\/rucker_books_since_1990.html\" target=\"blank\">books and software <\/a>whose creation is described in the <em>Journals<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/www.rudyrucker.com\/blog\/images5\/anteater.jpg\" \/><\/p>\n<p>To give you a fuller overview, I\u2019ve posted an extensive<a href=\"https:\/\/www.rudyrucker.com\/journals\/rucker_journals_contents.pdf\" target=\"blank\"> table of contents<\/a> as well.<\/p>\n<p>I don\u2019t expect many people to read my hefty <em>Journals <\/em>straight through. Dipping in is fine. And of course the ebook versions of the book will be searchable.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/www.rudyrucker.com\/blog\/images5\/rucker_1990_syltokyo.jpg\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Another approach might simply be for you to root around, subliminally guided by the muse.
