{"id":492,"date":"2008-02-28T21:57:09","date_gmt":"2008-02-29T05:57:09","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.rudyrucker.com\/blog\/2008\/02\/28\/dead-pigs-on-youtube\/"},"modified":"2023-01-19T09:43:47","modified_gmt":"2023-01-19T17:43:47","slug":"dead-pigs-on-youtube","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.rudyrucker.com\/blog\/2008\/02\/28\/dead-pigs-on-youtube\/","title":{"rendered":"Dead Pigs on YouTube"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"YouTube video player\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/BL2h8p1nYYc\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><span data-mce-type=\"bookmark\" style=\"display: inline-block; width: 0px; overflow: hidden; line-height: 0;\" class=\"mce_SELRES_start\">\u00ef\u00bb\u00bf<\/span><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;ve blogged about the<a href=\"https:\/\/www.rudyrucker.com\/blog\/2007\/06\/04\/the-dead-pigs\/\" target=\"blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> Dead Pigs<\/a> before, and our epochal performance at the faculty show of Randolph-Macon Woman&#8217;s College, where I taught math from 1980 to 1982..<\/p>\n<p>And now Andy Warren has put two Dead Pigs clips on YouTube, the opener and the encore In the encore clip above&#8212;thich I think is the better of the two&#8212;we&#8217;re doing a version of &#8220;Duke of Earl,&#8221; perhaps better called &#8220;Duke of Pigs.&#8221;<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Daddy sent me to Randy-Mac.<br \/>\nHe bought me a horse and a Cadillac.<br \/>\nI sold the car and bought me a brain.<br \/>\nNow I\u2019m half grown up and I\u2019m goin\u2019 insane.<br \/>\nDuke duke duke, Duke of Earl<br \/>\nduke duke, Duke of Earl,<br \/>\nduke duke, Duke of Earl.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>I was still a mathematics professor there at that time (although I knew I wouldn&#8217;t be back the next fall) and I went to meet my Calculus section the next morning. I&#8217;ve never had so attentive a class! But then I started talking about Calculus, as usual, and the glamor wore off.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"YouTube video player\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/7c4rzOQ2pvI\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>In the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=7c4rzOQ2pvI\">opener clip<\/a>\u00a0shown above, we&#8217;re first doing an (improvised) warm-up called &#8220;Dead Pigs&#8221; &#8212; and I kept trying to get the band to start in on the second song, which is something like &#8220;Louie Louie.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Apparently a guy who was interviewing to replace me as math professor was in the audience with the math department chairman at the show. I remember laughing about this with Mike Gambone, our saxaphonist and my best freind at RMWC. He was imagining the chair saying, like, &#8220;And, um, here&#8217;s Dr. Rucker, whom you&#8217;ll be stepping in for&#8230;&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>We had a few other songs, that we played in rehearsals and in our one other live show&#8212;such as the original &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.rudyrucker.com\/blog\/2005\/12\/31\/dead-pigs-song-on-dante-sculpture-new-rudy-story-online\/\" target=\"blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Year after Year,<\/a>&#8220;&#8212;but I don&#8217;t think we ever thought to record those.
