{"id":3719,"date":"2012-02-02T14:13:14","date_gmt":"2012-02-02T22:13:14","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.rudyrucker.com\/blog\/?p=3719"},"modified":"2013-06-18T12:51:57","modified_gmt":"2013-06-18T20:51:57","slug":"skungy-art-surfing-the-gnarl-read-feb-7-feb-11","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.rudyrucker.com\/blog\/2012\/02\/02\/skungy-art-surfing-the-gnarl-read-feb-7-feb-11\/","title":{"rendered":"Skungy Art.  &#8220;Surfing the Gnarl.&#8221;  Read Feb 7, Feb 11."},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I have a couple of upcoming readings on Feb 7 and Feb 11, but first I want to tell you about my new painting , <em>Loulou and Skungy<\/em>. <\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.rudyrucker.com\/blog\/images3\/90_loulouandskungy.jpg\"><br \/>\n<em> \u201cLoulou and Skungy,\u201d\u009d oil on canvas, February, 2012, 30\u201d\u009d x 30\u201d\u009d.  <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rudyrucker.com\/blog\/images3\/90_loulouandskungy1200.jpg\"> Click for a larger version of the image.<\/a><\/em><\/p>\n<p> Loulou is the somewhat mysterious woman in green, Skungy is the rat, and the guy holding the rat is named Morton Plant.  At present this is like an illustration of an unknown proverb or a forgotten fable.  I don\u2019t entirely know what\u2019s going on.  But I do have some ideas, as this is meant to be a previsualization of a scene in my next novel, <em>The Big Aha<\/em>.  Loulou is luring Morton  and his helper-rat Skungy to follow her.<\/p>\n<p>The composition was inspired by a Joan Brown painting <em><a target=\"blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.artnet.com\/ag\/fineartdetail.asp?wid=424557135&#038;gid=19\">The End of the Affair<\/a><\/em>, which I just saw in an exhibit that\u2019s at the <a target=\"blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.sjmusart.org\/paintings-by-joan-brown\">San Jose Museum of Art <\/a>till March 11.  And I used a thick medium to build up an impasto finish with kind of a van Gogh look on the left.    As always, originals and prints of my paintings are for sale on my <a target=\"blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.rudyrucker.com\/paintings\">Paintings <\/a>page.<\/p>\n<p><a target=\"blank\" href=\"https:\/\/secure.pmpress.org\/index.php?l=product_detail&#038;p=373\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.rudyrucker.com\/blog\/images3\/surfingthegnarl.jpg\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p>I have a small new book out, it\u2019s called <a target=\"blank\" href=\"https:\/\/secure.pmpress.org\/index.php?l=product_detail&#038;p=373\">Surfing the Gnarl<\/a>, and it\u2019s from the \u201cPM Outspoken Authors\u201d\u009d series at PM Press in Oakland. <\/p>\n<p>The book has two of my more outrageous short stories, a new essay of mine about science and literature called \u201cSurfing the Gnarl,\u201d\u009d and an interview conducted by Terry Bisson, the series editor.<\/p>\n<p>I\u2019ll be having a launch party for this slim volume at the funky <a target=\"blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.thegreenarcade.com\/\">Green Arcade <\/a>bookstore near Gough and Market Street in San Francisco, 7 PM, Tuesday, February 7.  <\/p>\n<p><a target=\"blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.rudyrucker.com\/nestedscrolls\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.rudyrucker.com\/blog\/images3\/nestedscrollscover_tor.jpg\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Looking a little further ahead, I\u2019ll be reading from <em>Surfing the Gnarl <\/em>or perhaps my autobiography<em> <a target=\"blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.rudyrucker.com\/nestedscrolls\">Nested Scrolls <\/a><\/em> or possibly my recently completed <em>Turing &#038; Burroughs <\/em>at an <a target=\"blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.sfinsf.org\/\">SF in SF <\/a> gathering at 7 PM on Saturday, February 11.  I\u2019ll be joined on the podium by the eminent SF writers K. W.
