I\u2019m like a seedy spectral figure in a 3 am Reno Casino, working the slots. Waiting for a hit, and not getting one. Here\u2019s my painting of the virus.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.rudyrucker.com\/blog\/images8\/181_pandemic_1.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/><\/p>\n<p><em> \u201cPandemic\u201d\u009d Acrylic on canvas, March, 2020, 30\u201d\u009d x 24\u201d\u009d. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rudyrucker.com\/blog\/images8\/181_pandemic_1_1200.jpg\"> Click for a larger version of the painting.<\/a><\/em><\/p>\n<p>I like how the colors came out. And the polka dots pull the whole thing together. I\u2019m gonna do a bigger one now. Instead of having a \u201cplan\u201d\u009d for this kind of spontaneous work, I might take all the wet paint that\u2019s still in my palette box and paint that on in chaotic mindless shapes that seem to look good in the moment, letting my brush do the (non) thinking, and then I start \u201cfixing\u201d\u009d the now \u201cruined\u201d\u009d canvas.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.rudyrucker.com\/blog\/images8\/rocketnest.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/><\/p>\n<p>(Here&#8217;s a picture of my art studio.\u00a0 I pull the table out onto the lawn)<\/p>\n<p>My friend Vernon Head says painting is all about ruining it and fixing it over and over until you feel like you can stop. I know I can stop when I can look at the canvas and think, \u201cI can\u2019t believe I did this, I\u2019ll never do this good of a painting again.\u201d\u009d If I quit before reaching this (admittedly somewhat self-delusional) state, then every time I look at the painting, I feel like, \u201cUgh, I\u2019ve got to work on that one some more,\u201d\u009d not that I always do go back and rework, and not that reworking is necessarily a good idea. Play it as it lays.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.rudyrucker.com\/blog\/images8\/teapotohedron.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Tabletop landscape with a fabulous reflective \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Utah_teapot\">teapotahedron<\/a>\u201d\u009d or &#8220;Utah teapot&#8221; in the mode of the graphical object studied by early Computer Graphics guys at University of Utah in 1975. I make my tea in it every day, having terminally burnt the living sh*t out of my cast-iron Japanese pot.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.rudyrucker.com\/blog\/images8\/rudypennytealovely.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/><\/p>\n<p>We had a high-tea party get together in San Francisco on Sylvia\u2019s birthday in February. Here\u2019s son Rudy Jr. and his wife Penny T.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.rudyrucker.com\/blog\/images8\/temestrailer.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/><\/p>\n<p>My art hero Dick Termes was in Half Moon Bay for a show at the end of February. He paints on spheres, and he hauled a load over them over the Sierras in this cute little trailer.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.rudyrucker.com\/blog\/images8\/squarespirals.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/><\/p>\n<p>I like the square spirals on this one. I think basically it\u2019s a cube on a sphere, with inscribed whirling squares in each face of the cube. Dick is incredibly careful and fastidious in his work\u2026drawing it, painting in faint paint, and then in dark paint (acrylics)\u2026takes him maybe six months to finish one of these works, which he calls <a href=\"https:\/\/termespheres.com\/\">Termespheres<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.rudyrucker.com\/blog\/images8\/dicktermeswithnwsphere.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The man himself. When I was working on my novel <em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.rudyrucker.com\/saucerwisdom\/\">Saucer Wisdom<\/a><\/em>, I went and visited Dick at his all-domes house, and made an excursion to that classic UFOlogcial \u201cClose Encounters\u201d\u009d Devil\u2019s Tower nearby.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.rudyrucker.com\/blog\/images8\/halfmoonspring.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Lovely springtime around Half Moon Bay, breathtaking fields of yellow flowers\u2026sorrel or mustard.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.rudyrucker.com\/blog\/images8\/opticalcomputer.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/><\/p>\n<p>I like stopping by the Pigeon Point lighthouse&#8212;the building itself very rickety by now, but they have the giant Fresnel lens on display in a visitor center. Love these things\u2026the full round curviness of a lens is sliced and displaced into a flattish shape. Like fitting yourself into a job.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.rudyrucker.com\/blog\/images8\/pigeonwhalerib.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/><\/p>\n<p>And naturally you gotta worship the Whale Rib.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.rudyrucker.com\/blog\/images8\/uglyideas.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/><\/p>\n<p>I was in the woods near the upper end of Lexington Reservoir, and found this graffiti. Great spontaneous freestyle font.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.rudyrucker.com\/blog\/images8\/marcellodolce.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/><\/p>\n<p>We were on a Fellini kick and watched a bunch of his movies on the Criterion channel and on the Amazon Prime Filmbox add-on channel.<em> Nights of Cabaria<\/em> is truly great. Marcello here in <em>La Dolce Vita<\/em>. We were reading this Kindle book of interviews with Fellini, called<em> I, Fellini<\/em>, some great stuff in there. Very funny how Federico related to Marcello, kind of teasing each other. F says he picked M to star in so many of his movies because he\u2019d seen M around Rome eating good meals in restaurants with such great pleasure that F knew he\u2019d be the perfect stand-in for his transreal persona in <em>Dolce Vita<\/em> and<em> 8 1\/2<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.rudyrucker.com\/blog\/images8\/wallplants.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Spring hits early here, like in February, and <em>sproing<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.rudyrucker.com\/blog\/images8\/tablescape.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Another tablescape, with vanishing points. I\u2019m not getting out as much as I\u2019d like to.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.rudyrucker.com\/blog\/images8\/sylvia_dakar.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/><\/p>\n<p>I\u2019ve been painting a certain amount and Sylvia has been quilting. This is a recent one called \u201cDakar.\u201d\u009d More on the<a href=\"www.sylviarucker.com\"> Sylvia\u2019s Quilts <\/a>page.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.rudyrucker.com\/blog\/images8\/japanesebooksreinsch.jpg.\" alt=\"\" \/><\/p>\n<p>I found a a couple of sets of beautifully fey and whimsical manga-type Japanese covers of my novels, and I sold this set.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.rudyrucker.com\/blog\/images8\/rudynewdrill.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Rudy gave me a cordless drill\u2026my old electric drill is thirty years old, and I\u2019d thought of it as kind of modern, but this new one kicks big ass.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.rudyrucker.com\/blog\/images8\/playboyyams.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Cleaning out boxes of papers in our increasingly copious spare time. Came across this collaged out bit of a yam box from a supermarket. I had a whole thing about those yam boxes back in the early 1970s. First of all \u201cPlay Boy Yams\u201d\u009d spelled backwards is \u201cSmay Yob Yalp.\u201d\u009d Second of all, back then I wrote a \u201cPlayboy Yam\u201d\u009d song, to be sung in the style of Robert Johnson.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>I\u2019m eyeless and I\u2019m waxed<br \/>\nI\u2019m orange all the way through<br \/>\nI\u2019m pointed at both ends<br \/>\nNow whaddya ganna do<br \/>\nI\u2019ll be your yam<br \/>\nAnd do what yam boys do<br \/>\nI\u2019ll be your yam all night<br \/>\nAnd in the daytime too.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.rudyrucker.com\/blog\/images8\/woodeneye.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/><\/p>\n<p>A sawed off limb, a wooden eye.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.rudyrucker.com\/blog\/images8\/wyetree.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Invoking the \u201cairing out\u201d\u009d loophole to the shelter-at-home policy, we walked up the block today. Our beautiful world. My favorite tree nearby is this mossed oak wye.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.rudyrucker.com\/blog\/images8\/sylviarudywithbookscampbell.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/><\/p>\n<p>In the basement-cleaning vein, I sold a ton of old author copies to Recycle Bookstore in Campbell and downtown San Jose, CA, before the virus kicked in. When the stores reopen, go check \u201d\u02dcem out, bargains and rarities galore.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.rudyrucker.com\/blog\/images8\/zepdorito.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/><\/p>\n<p>[This is a surfer friend of Rudy Jr&#8217;s, explaining to me that Doritos look like waves. He&#8217;s John Bolingbroke, an inspiration for my story with Marc Laidlaw, &#8220;Surfers at the End of Time.&#8221;]<\/p>\n<p>I finished writing a novelette, \u201cMary Mary\u201d\u009d that I\u2019ve been working on for seven weeks. Here\u2019s a part of the ending.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Wafting into Gee\u2019s cave, ectoplasmic Mary spots the gorgeous clone Mary, lying on her bed, mouth slack, in a state of torpor. She settles onto clone Mary like a shroud\u2014or like a flesh-eating jellyfish. She sinks directly into the young woman\u2019s flesh, and behold! She\u2019s fully alive, with her soul in a body, just the way it\u2019s supposed to be. Truly risen from the dead.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGood deal,\u201d\u009d says Gee Willikers, sitting up from the other bed. \u201cI\u2019ve been making calls.
