Rudy-

You should check out this Bosch video by the guitarist Buckethead, it plays up the "horror-film" aspects of Bosch, but it's still a pretty cool video @

Holy crap, it must be something in the water supply. I'm sitting here burning a bunch of old Betty Boop cartoons for an upcoming reunion and marvelling at the surrealism of it all. Check out the Fleischers' SNOW WHITE and POOR CINDERELLA if you can find them; ordinary objects are alive and there are intrusions from other dimensions. Currently the audio track of THE OLD MAN OF THE MOUNTAIN is running through my brain in Cab Calloway's voice:
"With a long, white beard and a crooked stare,
He tramps along with the folks all scared;
With a twinkle in his eye, he passes them by,
The Old Man of the Mountain!"

Linus, I just watched "Porky in Wackyland" as I have a DVD of WB toons. Had seen it before, but good to be reminded of it. A cultural Rosetta Stone. Colloquial surrealism. The "It CAN happen here" slogan of Wackland is echoed on Zappa's FREAK OUT album as "It can't happen here," same intonation. The layered doors of the Dodo's castle are echoed in the layered doors to the viewing room in Mystery Science Theater 3000.

I was also reminded of SF, another form of colloquial (not high art) surrealism. Adn for that matter Bosch. Noticed a gryllos (man with legs coming out of his head). Come to think of it the surrealists were joky, rabble rousers and beyond the pale of high art too. Only in retrospect are they entombed in the museums.

I found a 1931 Betty Boop version of "Jack and the Beanstalk":

Also there's a 1902 silent (non-animated) version by Thomas Edison, inventor of the movie camera!

And, once again, the Ub Iwerks version from 1933

"Porky In Wackyland" later renamed "Dough For The Do-Do" (pronounced dough-dough) when Fritz Freleng transfered this bizarre cartoon into color in the 40's really "pushes the envelope" even for Warner Bros animation. See wikipedia.... By the way, what is the unspeakable power of this Snoopy and Woodstock sticker now on my new laptop under the "Jefferson Airplane Loves You" sticker?: (master chef Woodstock dressed in French chef's hat serving enthusiastic Snoopy from birdsnest) Answer: Charles Schultz named Woodstock after the notorious 3 day arts festival!!!
(See Snoopystore dot com for sticker)

p.s. Where can the devout cyberpunk get a pair of Godel glasses?

I can't remember who said it or what the exact quote is, but it's something to the effect that a triangle would think that God is triangular, and a circle would think that He's circular. I think Huston Smith quoted it in "The Religions of Man."

All I can think when I look at that Bosch painting of St. John the Baptist is how damn beautiful it is; the color, the composition, the overall tone. These things I think are usually overshadowed by his bizarre iconography.

I loved what you did with Brueghel - the earthiness of the depiction, the speculations as to his inner creative process - and would be happy if what you do with Bosch here turns out even half as well.
